Grows to over 6m with dark brown bark. Branches are smooth and thorn less, the leaves are 3 to 7cm long, matt green and slightly hairy. Greenish white, star shaped flowers contain male and female parts and appear in clusters during May and June. The leaves are the favourite food of the brimstone butterfly. Birds like the berries that develop later in the year. Various parts of the tree are used to make dyes.
